the Web Developer
So how am I a web developer?
In my world “developer” can mean everything from web designer to web application programmer, from software developer to information architect, from systems development analyst to database engineer. In terms of the web, usually IT work is described as either design or development, which can be confusing because even these terms are used interchangeably. A web designer focuses on the aesthetic appearance, human usability, and overall artistic impression of a website - while the web developer actually codes the functionality into the site using some web programming.
I really do all of these things. As a designer I use Adobe software for much of my digital design and artistry. My emphasis when coding is on solid standards-compliant XHTML and CSS so that my work is crisp, clean, and semantically delicious. As a developer I’ve coded websites with PHP, ASP/ASP.NET (VB/C#), JSP, ColdFusion, JavaScript and Ajax, VBScript, ActionScript, Flash, and Flex. I’ve integrated my dynamic front-end solutions into such back-end databases as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, and even the lowly MSAccess.
My web development experience comes mostly from years of hand coding HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with a meager text editor. I also have a Master of Science in Information Systems from Northeastern University.
There is a non-trivial of overlap between software engineering, software coding, and web development… and in fact sometimes the lines blur beyond recognition. As such, I have a separate software engineering section on this site located here, and a semi-hidden area of random programming projects located here.
